It depicts the titular character of Shigeru Mizuki's legendary manga and anime series in a compact, collectible format. GeGeGe no Kitaro, originally created in 1960 and first known as Hakaba Kitaro, follows Kitaro — the last survivor of the Ghost Tribe — as he strives to unite the worlds of humans and yōkai, the spirit-monsters of Japanese folklore. He is accompanied by the remains of his father, Medama-Oyaji, a mummified Ghost Tribesman reincarnated to inhabit his own eyeball, along with allies such as Nezumi-Otoko the rat-man and Neko-Musume the cat-girl. While the GeGeGe no Kitaro version of Kitaro is a friendly boy who genuinely seeks the best for both humans and yōkai, his earlier incarnation in Hakaba Kitaro portrayed a much darker, more mischievous character lacking empathy for humans.
