The story follows Leo, a white lion who becomes king of the jungle after his father Caesar is killed by hunters. The 1997 animated film Jungle Emperor Leo covers the latter half of the manga, depicting Leo as an adult protecting his family and his jungle from various threats including poachers led by the greedy Ham Egg, internal conflicts among the animals, and a deadly plague. Leo is guided by Earth Mother, a benevolent mammoth elder from Mount Moon.
