Zenigata is Lupin III's perennial arch-rival, conceived by creator Monkey Punch as a "human Tom and Jerry" dynamic — a chase that can never truly end. The character is based on the famous Japanese crime-fighter Heiji Zenigata, known for throwing coins as weapons; Zenigata's signature handcuff-throwing technique is his own variation on this legacy. Originally named Heiji Zenigata VII, the character was renamed Koichi Zenigata starting from Lupin the 3rd Part 2. His true literary counterpart, however, is Maurice Leblanc's Inspector Ganimard, Arsène Lupin's rival from the original novels. Zenigata is typically depicted as a middle-aged man in his iconic trench coat, suit, and fedora.
