Hoshi-kun and his companion Tsuki-chan first appeared on June 24, 2012, in Kikuo's song "And You Became the Moon," with a music video created by si_ku.k. The character became so closely associated with Kikuo that the two are considered inseparable—when fans think of Kikuo, they think of Hoshi-kun.
