This figure depicts Betobeto-san, a yōkai from Japanese folklore, as featured in Nonnon-Baa to Ore. Betobeto-san are formless specters recognizable only by the telltale "beto beto" clacking sound of wooden clogs echoing in the night. They haunt alleys and narrow, sloped roads, appearing only after dark. When encountered, Betobeto-san synchronizes its pace with lone nighttime walkers, following them and getting closer with every step. Though the experience can be deeply unsettling, this yōkai is entirely harmless. The traditional method of escape is simply to step to the side of the road and politely say "After you, betobetosan," allowing the footsteps to pass ahead and vanish from earshot. In northern Fukui Prefecture, a winter variant known as bishagatsuku appears during cold sleet storms, named for the "bisha bisha" sound of phantom feet crunching through slush.
