Edward Newgate, known as Whitebeard, was one of the Four Emperors who ruled over the New World in One Piece and was widely regarded as the Strongest Man in the World. As captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, he considered his entire crew as his sons and ruled with a fatherly devotion that inspired fierce loyalty. Wielding the power of the Gura Gura no Mi, which allowed him to create devastating earthquakes, Whitebeard met his end during the Marineford War while fighting to rescue his adopted son Portgas D. Ace from execution. His death marked a turning point in the series, ushering in a new era of piracy.
