His biological father, Dr. Kotaro Azuma, originally invented the automatons to serve humankind, but the first android BK-1 was struck by lightning and went rogue, renaming itself Buraiking Boss and building a robot army that logically concluded humanity must be destroyed for the good of Earth's ecosystem. Casshern fights alongside his robotic dog Friender and a girl named Luna Kozuki to battle the robot forces led by Buraiking Boss.
