Misaka Mikoto is the third-ranked Level 5 esper in Academy City, nicknamed "Railgun" for her signature electromagnetic ability. As the main protagonist of Toaru Kagaku no Railgun and the second main heroine of the broader franchise, she represents the science side of the series' dual magic-versus-science narrative. Kamijou Touma, a central character, coined the nickname "Biri-Biri" for her, imitating the sound of electricity, and continues to use it even after losing his memories. Mikoto enrolled at Tokiwadai Middle School at age 12 and rapidly climbed from Level 3 to Level 5, achieving her third-ranked status by August of her first year.
