Natsume Yuujinchou follows Natsume Takashi, a teenager who can see yokai — supernatural spirits invisible to most people. After inheriting the Book of Friends from his late grandmother Reiko, who bound countless yokai names within its pages, Takashi finds himself pursued by spirits seeking their freedom. Unlike his grandmother, who used the book to command yokai, Takashi chooses to return the names and release them. Madara, a powerful wolf-like yokai, serves as his self-appointed bodyguard and mentor, though he often takes the form of a small, round lucky cat called Nyanko-sensei. Their evolving relationship forms the emotional core of the series, blending gentle supernatural encounters with themes of loneliness and connection.
